ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In the battle for first place in the MW conference regular season standings, San Diego State women's soccer drew 0-0 with New Mexico on Thursday night at the UNM soccer complex. SDSU totaled 13 shots on Thursday as the Aztecs held New Mexico to a 0-0 draw.
It was a cold night in Albuquerque, but the Aztecs came out hot in the opening minutes of the contest and put the Lobos under pressure throughout the first half. San Diego State dominated possession early on but could not find a way past the compact defense of New Mexico, and the teams remained deadlocked at 0-0 through the first 25 minutes. In the 28th minute, however, New Mexico floated in a cross that was deflected up in the air by the Aztecs, and the ball then fell to the feet of Molly Myers of New Mexico who got off a shot from point-blank range that was saved by a sprawling Madueno.
The next best chance of the night would fall to SDSU's Denise Castro. She forced the best save of the night with 45 seconds to go in the first half when she picked off a loose pass from the New Mexico defenders and unleashed a shot from just outside the box that was parried wide by the Lobos keeper and the match remained 0-0 heading into the halftime break.
Goal-scoring chances were hard to come by in the second half for both squads, but New Mexico had the better chance to open the scoring in the 72nd minute. After a ball was played into the box, Jadyn Edwards controlled it and sent a shot that seemed to be curling into the top left corner of the goal, but the ball hit the crossbar and bounced back into play, keeping the score level at 0-0. From then on it was the Aztecs who looked the more likely of the two squads to find an opening goal, but neither side were able to find the game winning goal, and the match finished 0-0.
Up Next: San Diego State will be the No. 5 seed in the Mountain West Conference Tournament. Action will begin on Sunday evening at 4 p.m. MT when the Aztecs face off against Colorado College in the quarterfinal round, with the winner advancing to play the No. 1 seed Wyoming on Wednesday at 4 p.m. MT.
