COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State's Meredith Smithbaker was named Mountain West Swimmer of the Week for the period ending Oct. 23, as announced Tuesday by the conference office.

With her award, the Aztec sophomore garnered the second MW weekly accolade of her career and SDSU's third this season.

Smithbaker competed in six races at the GCU Quad Meet in Phoenix, Arizona, Oct. 21-22, winning two individual event titles and contributing to three triumphant Aztec relay teams, helping the Scarlet and Black post a 6-0 record against three other schools.

Thanks in part to Smithbaker's efforts during the two-day meet, San Diego State swept past host Grand Canyon (147-76 & 156-66), Loyola Marymount (165-39 & 168-34) and Seattle U (164-39 & 168-36), extending their streak of dual-meet victories to 44 straight since January 2018.

On the first day of competition, Smithbaker swam the breaststroke in SDSU's victorious 200 medley relay that posted a winning time of 1:42.80 before capturing the 100 freestyle with a season-fast 50.31. She also logged a third-place swim of 1:03.56 in the 100 breaststroke.

A native of Fort Collins, Colorado, Smithbaker returned the next day and once again handled the breaststroke segment of the Aztecs' winning 400 medley relay that set a pool record with a 3:46.88 clocking before claiming another individual crown in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 23.36.

To put the finishing touches on a successful weekend, Smithbaker swam the second leg of SDSU's victorious 200 freestyle that logged a winning time of 1:33.8, as the Scarlet and Black combined for wins in 21 of 24 events at the meet.

Smithbaker and the Aztecs return to action on Saturday, Nov. 5 when they play host to Utah Tech in a dual meet at Aztec Aquaplex. First swim is set for 10 a.m. PT.
