SAN DIEGO – Predicted to win an unprecedented 15th Mountain West crown in 2022-23 and ranked No. 19 in the initial AP Top 25 Poll, the San Diego State men's basketball team garnered 173 points and is ranked No. 20 in the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll. The announcement was made Tuesday morning.
This marks the third time in program history the Aztecs have been included in the preseason Coaches Poll. The two previous occurrences were prior to the 2012-13 campaign, when SDSU was also ranked No. 20, and in 2014-15 when San Diego State slotted in at No. 17 in USA Today's first poll of the season.
San Diego State occupies the No. 20 ranking for the fifth time in program history with all the previous rankings at that spot having come in since 2012-13. SDSU has appeared in every position in the poll between No. 4 and No. 25.
The Aztecs are the only Mountain West program to appear in either major poll this season.
San Diego State opens its campaign with an exhibition game on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at Steve Fisher Court at Viejas Arena against San Diego Christian College. Six days later, on Monday, Nov. 7, the regular season tips off when Cal State Fullerton comes to town to take on the Aztecs.
