SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The San Diego State men's tennis team played six matches, four singles and two doubles, on the final day of the UCSB Fall Classic. The Scarlet and Black won all but one singles match on Sunday.
Following a pair of wins on the second day of the tournament, Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice kept it rolling by defeating Pierre Boullenger, of host UC Santa Barbara, 7-5, 6-4.
The furthest Aztec to advance in the singles bracket, Liam Spiers faced another UCSB Gaucho, Julian DeSousa, and also picked up a win. After a 6-2 victory in the first set, Spiers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second set before DeSousa retired.
Mathieu Josserand went up against Thibaud Maxant of Saint Mary's and was the third Aztec to beat Maxant this season, winning with a consistent 6-2, 6-2 score. Johannes Seeman defeated Maxant in the Battle in the Bay Qualifying back on Sept. 16 and Gonzalez Fitzmaurice beat him yesterday.
Andre Saleh won twice yesterday but could not find the same success against Logan Thompson of Westmont on Sunday, falling 6-1, 6-4.
In doubles, Spiers and Saleh, did not have enough in the tank to overcome home court advantage against UCSB's DeSousa and Boullenger, as they were bested 8-4.
Josserand and Gonzalez Fitzmaurice faced off against Aram Noroozian and Daniil Kakhniuk from New Mexico but dropped the set 8-3.
