Aztecs Post Seven Wins on Friday

SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis wrapped up a successful day of competition at two different sites around San Diego on Friday. The Aztecs posted three wins at the SDSU Fall Classic, and also won four matches at the USD Collegiate Invitational.

SDSU Fall Classic I, San Diego
San Diego State earned three singles wins in all three of their matches on Friday. Julia Jordan, Alexandria Von Tersch Pohrer and Cecile Morin all won their respective singles matches. All three winning Aztecs won in straight sets. Morin set the tone for the Aztecs as she posted a 7-5, 6-3 win on Friday morning to move on the semifinals of the white division of singles play. Von Tersch Pohrer continued the trend and won her opening round match in straight sets fashion as well, dispatching Zuzanna Szczepanska of UTEP in a hard-fought match. Von Tersch Pohrer won the first set 6-4, before clinching her match in a thrilling 7-6 (8) game to take the match. Jordan also won her match on Friday morning. After winning the first set 6-4, Jordan's opponent withdrew with an injury, advancing Jordan to the next round.

As for doubles play, the Aztecs found things tougher. Rania Azziz made her Aztec debut in doubles play with Morin, but they fell to Abrahim and Lebisova of UTEP 6-4. Additionally, Jordan and Von Tersch Pohrer also lost their doubles match to Duffy and Yanotoskaya of Cal State Fullerton, 6-2.

USD Collegiate Invitational, San Diego
The other four Aztecs competing on Friday were at the USD Collegiate Invitational. In their first day as a doubles duo Dariya Detkovskaya and Andjela Skrobonja earned two wins at the tournament on Friday. In their first round match the two took down Kayla Meraz and Tanvi Narendran of Arizona 6-3, before winning their quarterfinal match later in the day in dominate fashion, 6-1 over Matilde Morais, and Jasmine Adams of North Texas. The duo will play in the semifinal tomorrow at 10 a.m. PT against Samantha Mannix and Marisa Schmidt of Iowa. Additionally, Andreea Velcea and Alicia Melosch fell in their doubles match 6-2.
 
As for singles the Aztecs posted two wins on Saturday. Melosch bounced back from her doubles defeat and won her singles match in straight sets, winning 6-2, 7-6(1).  Skrobonja capped off an impressive 3-0 day with a singles win on Friday afternoon, also winning in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-1. Detkovskaya and Velceea also took part in singles actions for the Aztecs, and both took their matches to three sets. Velceea won the first set of her match 6-4, before falling in the next two 2-6, 2-6. Detkovskaya fell in her first set 4-6, before  earning a bounce-back win in the second set 7-5, but lost the decisive third set 6-1.
