Aztec Men’s Tennis Opens Season in Pair of Tournaments

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men's tennis team opens its 2022 fall schedule this weekend with a split roster competing at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Arizona, and the Battle in the Bay Qualifying in Berkeley, California.

Seven of the eight players competing for SDSU will be making their debuts in the Scarlet and Black, along with returning junior Johannes Seeman.

Four Aztecs will compete at the Battle in the Bay, Sept. 16-18 at Hellman Tennis Center, including senior Chikaya Sato, juniors Johannes Seeman and Bora Sengul, and freshman Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice.

Sato and Sengul transferred to the Mesa from Penn State, where together they won six of their first eight doubles results a season ago.

Seeman competed in 29 singles matches for SDSU last season, finishing with a winning record in conference play and garnering All-Mountain West honors for his singles performance.

Gonzalez Fitzmaurice is a San Diego native who competed for the Mexican National Team in his youth.

San Diego State will be represented by junior Andre Saleh, sophomores Mathieu Josserand and Liam Spiers, and freshman Lenny Melzer at the Wildcat Invitational at Lanelle Robson Tennis Center.

Saleh comes to the Mesa by way of Nebraska, where he excelled on and off the court, winning eight times in singles and being named to the Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll during the Spring 2020 semester.

Josserand, a French native, competed for James Madison last year, compiling a 16-13 overall record while going a dominant 12-5 in dual play.

Spiers returns to Arizona, where he spent last year competing for Ottawa University of Arizona in Surprise. In his lone season with the Spirit, He was named NAIA West Region Rookie of the Year.

Freshman Lenny Melzer hails from Luxembourg, where he won national championships in 2016 and 2019.

Following this weekend's action, the Aztecs will head to Napa, California, to compete in the Battle in the Bay and the Silverado Invitational from Sept. 23-25.
