SAN DIEGO – Three Aztec swimmers competed last week at the 2022 Phillips 66 National Championships, which were held in Irvine, California.
Kristina Murphy competed in the 200m breaststroke on Wednesday, while Alex Roberts took part in the 100m backstroke on Friday, and Meredith Smithbaker competed in the 100m breaststroke on Friday.
Murphy, who holds seven different top-10 all-time marks at SDSU and is a four-time All-Mountain West honoree, took part in the 200m breaststroke competition on Wednesday morning. In her opening heat she finished in second place and advanced to the C final in a time of 2:32.09. In the C final she finished with a time of 2:31.98, good for 21st overall.
Smithbaker, who earned freshman of the meet at the 2022 Mountain West Championships and was a two-event champion at the meet, competed in the 100m breaststroke on Friday afternoon. The 200 free relay and 800 free relay MW Champion finished 33rd in the event, with a time of 1:11.16. Roberts wrapped up the competition for the Aztecs when she took part in the 100m backstroke on Friday. The 2022 All-Mountain West honoree finished in 25th overall in the event, with a time of 1:02.40.
The Aztecs won the 2022 Mountain West title back in February and scored a Mountain West record 1,541.5 points in the process. The Aztecs have won three of the past four Mountain West titles and six of the last 12 conference championships.
