SAN DIEGO – The men's basketball programs at San Diego State and Stanford will begin a home-and-home series in the 2022-23 campaign, the first meeting in 25 seasons, with the Aztecs heading to Stanford this year and the Cardinal returning the game at Viejas Arena in 2023-24.

On Nov. 15, San Diego State will visit Maples Pavilion for the third time in program history. The game time will be announced at a later date and as part of the agreement, Stanford will return the game next season and appear at Steve Fisher Court at Viejas Arena. The date for the return game and its time has not been determined.

Overall, the Cardinal hold an 4-0 advantage in the all-time series, which began in the 1940-41 season. The teams next met at the Sports Arena in 1978-79. The last two get togethers were at Stanford in 1996-97, and at Cox Arena in the 1997-98 campaign.

Since the start of the 2010-11 season, San Diego State is 200-35 (.851) in games played in California, regardless of location. In addition, since the start of the Coach Dutcher/Fisher era (1999-2000), the Aztecs are 122-34 (.781) against 24 of the other 25 current Division I schools in California (SDSU has not played Cal Baptist), and have a winning record against all but four of those 24. In program history against the 24 schools, the Aztecs are 457-324 (.584) overall.

San Diego State has a 307-100 (.754) record, the ninth best mark in the nation and has appeared in nine NCAA tournaments since the opening of the 2010-11 campaign. Stanford, in the same time frame, has a 220-173 record (.560), No. 124 nationally, and has competed in one NCAA tournament.

The Aztecs, since the start of the 2019-20 season, are 4-1 against Pac-12 programs.

In each of their way-too-early-top-25, Seth Davis, Andy Katz and Jon Rothstein had the Aztecs ranked No. 22, No. 23 and No. 25 for 2022-23 and late last month, ESPN's Jeff Borzello had SDSU ranked No. 19.

San Diego State returns fifth-year seniors Nathan Mensah, Adam Seiko, Aguek Arop, and Matt Bradley in 2022-23, and four-fifths of its starting line up from a team that went 23-9 last year. In 2021-22, San Diego State appeared in the championship game of the Mountain West tournament for the fifth consecutive year and competed in the NCAA tournament for the second straight season.

In addition to the aforementioned players, San Diego State is expecting the return of significant contributors Lamont Butler and Keshad Johnson as well as newcomers Jaedon LeDee, who sat out the 2021-22 season due to NCAA transfer rules, Darrion Trammel, a transfer from Seattle U., Micah Parrish, a transfer from Oakland, and freshmen Miles Byrd and Elijah Saunders.
