SAN DIEGO – Head Coach Peter Mattera announced on Wednesday that two transfers will join the SDSU women's tennis program. Rania Azziz and Andjela Skrobonja will join the Aztecs women's tennis program this fall.

"Aztec women's tennis is very excited to welcome Rania and Andjela to our family," head coach Peter Matter said. "They are both excellent students and very accomplished players. They have already been proven winners at the division one level, and are going to help elevate the program as we seek to repeat as Mountain West Conference Champions and make a deep run at the NCAA Tournament. In combination with a strong group of returners, we are very much looking forward to hitting the ground running in September for our 2022-23 season."

Rania Azziz comes to The Mesa after one year at LSU. She competed at the No. 5 and No. 6 slot throughout the singles seasons for the Tigers in 2021-22, and at both the No. 2 and No. 3 slot in doubles play. Between doubles and singles she posted seven victories, and was leading in in multiple matches that went unfinished due to results on other courts during the 2021-22 season.

"Rania will bring some more international competition and experience to our roster," Associate Head Coach Nicolas Vinel said. "She will bring a lot of experience with her having played in a very competitive LSU environment, as well as internationally prior to LSU."

Andjela Skrobonja joins the Aztecs after two successful seasons at FIU. She played mostly at the No. 3 slot for the Panthers, Skrobonja posted a 14-4 record in singles play during the 2022 season, and went 12-3 overall and 9-1 in her last 10 doubles matches. A second-team All-Conference USA selection during the 2020-21 season, Skrobonja went a combined 24-6 in her FIU singles career and was 22-4 in doubles play. An experienced junior player as well, Skrobonja was ranked as high 112 in the world and played in the European Championships in both 2018 and 2019.

"We are extremely excited to have Andjela joining our program," Vinel said. "She has played at a high level both in the junior ranks in Europe and collegiately at FIU. She will bring more experience to our already very experienced roster as we look to win the Mountain West Conference tournament and return to the NCAA Tournament."

The two transfers will be added to an already strong roster for the 2022-23 season. The Aztecs are returning five athletes who played key roles on the 2021-22 team that went 19-7, won the conference tournament, and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The Aztecs 19 wins during the 2021-22 season were their most since the 2012-13 season, and their 6-2 record in conference play was the squads best win-percentage since the 2012-13 season as well.
