SAN DIEGO -- One former Aztec reached base in half his plate appearances during the week while another competed in a golf tournament.
In the MLB, catcher Seby Zavala (2012-15) appeared in five of the six games for the Chicago White Sox. He started four at catcher while also coming off the bench to catch once. For the week, he batted .444 with a .500 on-base percentage, two runs scored and five RBIs. Starting off the week hot, Zavala doubled in Leury Garcia in the fifth and singled in AJ Pollock in the seventh in a blowout 11-4 Tuesday night victory over the Los Angeles Angels. In Sunday's 13-4 win over San Francisco, he drove in Leury Garcia three times with a single in the fourth, and doubles in the eighth and ninth innings. It was his first three-hit game since he became the first player in MLB history to hit his first three career homers in the same game last July. So far this season, Zavala is batting .333 with a .364 on-base percentage, a home run, 11 RBIs and six runs. Infielder Ty France (2013-15) is on the 10-Day IL for Seattle. He currently leads all of baseball with 14 hit-by-pitches. On the season, France is batting .316 with a .390 on-base percentage, 10 home runs, 45 RBIs and 32 runs. Washington pitcher Stephen Strasburg (2007-09) is on the 15-Day IL with a stress reaction in his ribs. Outfielder Greg Allen (2012-14) is spending at least the first two months of the season on the 60-Day IL for Pittsburgh.
On the PGA Tour, Scott Piercy (1999-2001) did not make the cut in the John Deere Classic last weekend. Xander Schauffele (2013-15) is ranked 11th in the world and eighth in the FedEx Cup and J.J. Spaun (2009-12) is ranked 29th in the FedEx Cup. This weekend, Schauffele and Spaun are competing in the Genesis Scottish Open, in North Berwick, Scotland.
