SAN DIEGO -- A pair of former Aztec baseball players were called back up to the big leagues.
In the MLB, infielder Ty France (2013-15) started at first base in six of Seattle's seven games. Last week, France hit .217 with a .280 on-base percentage, a home run, five RBIs and two runs. He currently leads all of baseball with 67 games played, 300 plate appearances and 14 hit-by-pitches. France started off the week hot, hitting a two-run homer off Minnesota starter Joe Ryan in a 5-0 win on Tuesday. He slugged a bases-clearing double in the fourth inning in Friday's 8-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels.On the season, France is batting .314 with a .391 on-base percentage, 10 home runs, 44 RBIs and 30 runs scored. Infielder Alan Trejo (2015-17) was called back up to the bigs by Colorado. He filled in at third base in Friday's win over the San Diego Padres, but was sent back down to Triple-A over the weekend. Trejo's season totals sit at a .231 batting average, a .250 on-base percentage, a homer, six RBis and six runs. Catcher Seby Zavala (2012-15) was also called up by the Chicago White Sox. He pinch hit in a pair of games before seeing three full games behind the plate. So far, Zavala is batting .313, with a homer, four RBIs and three runs. He made his season debut a week ago Sunday and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Zavala was instrumental in Wednesday's win over Detroit, swatting a two-run shot in the fifth inning before knocking in another run in the sixth. Washington pitcher Stephen Strasburg (2008-09) is on the 15-Day IL with a stress reaction in his ribs. Outfielder Greg Allen (2012-14) is spending at least the first two months of the season on the 60-Day IL for Pittsburgh.
On the PGA Tour, Xander Schauffele (2013-15) tied for 14th in the U.S. Open Championship at 2-over-par. Schauffele is ranked 15th in the world and 20th in the FedEx Cup, and J.J. Spaun (2009-12) is ranked 26th in the FedEx Cup. This weekend, Scott Piercy (1999-2001), Spaun, and Schauffele are competing in the Travelers Championship, in Cromwell, Connecticut.
