SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State moved up two places to 22nd in the latest D1Softball rankings, which were released Monday on D1softball.com. The Aztecs (33-12, 16-2 MW) swept a series at San Jose State by a combined score of 25-6.
SDSU, which has won six consecutive games, is ahead of No. 23 Louisiana, No. 24 Wichita State and No. 25 LSU in the rankings, and just behind No. 20 Notre Dame and No. 21 Michigan. San Diego State has a victory over current No. 9 Washington and a 7-6, eight-inning loss to current No. 7 Northwestern. Oklahoma remains the top-ranked team with a 45-1 record, while Virginia Tech, Florida State, Arkansas and UCLA round out the top 5.
The Aztecs are the second-ranked team among Group of 5 programs, only trailing No. 19 UCF.
SDSU has been in the D1Softball rankings each of the last five weeks, debuting at No. 25 on April 4, rising to 24th (April 11) and 23rd (April 18) the next two weeks, coming in at No. 24 on April 25 and checking in at best of No. 22 today.
San Diego State has won all six of its MW series this season and is in first in the league standings at 16-2, three games ahead of Boise State and UNLV, which are each 13-5 in league play. The Aztecs have already won series against Boise State and UNLV and can clinch the division title with a sweep at home against Utah State this weekend regardless of what happens with the Broncos and Rebels. SDSU ends its regular season with a series at New Mexico from May 12-14.
San Diego State and the Aggies (25-24, 10-8 MW) will play 6 p.m. PT Friday, 4 p.m. PT Saturday and noon PT Sunday at SDSU Softball Stadium. Following the game Sunday will be a ceremony honoring the Aztecs' six departing seniors - Taylor Adams, Maggie Balint, Jessica Cordola, Alexa Schultz, Danielle Romanello and Nicole Siess.
