NORMAN, Okla. -- The San Diego State men's golf team slipped a spot and sits in eighth place after two rounds of the NCAA Norman Regional Tuesday on the par-72, 7,452-yard Jimmy Austin OU Golf Club. The Aztecs shot a 5-over 293 during the windy second round and at 7-over 583 for the tournament are 11 strokes back from a top-five position, which would secure a spot into the NCAA Championships.
No. 18 Auburn leads at 20-under 556, followed by host and No. 1 overall seed Oklahoma (-14). No. 7 Texas (-8), No. 25 Ole Miss (-8) and No. 50 Utah (-4) are also in the top 5, while No. 24 South Carolina is also under par at 3-under. No. 37 Louisville (+5) and No. 48 SDSU (+7) hold a significant lead over No. 37 Missouri and Kansas State, which are tied for ninth at +14.
San Diego State's best round of the day came from freshman Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands), who carded a 2-under 70 when the scoring average for the 75 golfers was 73.84. Hastings, who moved up 21 places on the day and is tied for 24th at 1-over 145, eagled the par-4, 322-yard 10th, and notched five birdies, including the final two closing holes in the par-4, 485-yard 17th and the par-5, 586-yard 18th. He also had five bogeys but enters the final round in contention for the lowest individual not on a qualifying team to advance to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 27-June 1, at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Senior Steve Sugimoto (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS), meanwhile, is a shot back in a tie for 28th at 2-over 146 following a 2-over 74 today. Sugimoto overcame a double bogey on the par-4, 472-yard first hole with birdies on the par-3, 182-yard sixth and No. 10 to get back to even-par. Bogeys, however, on the par-3, 260-yard 15th and No. 17 had him sign for a 74.
Senior Zihao Jin (Beijing/Rancho Bernardo HS) bounced back from a 5-over 77 in yesterday's first round with an even-par 72 today to move up 18 places to a tie for 43rd at +5. Today Jin notched three birdies - the par-3, 173-yard second, the par-5, 627-yard fifth and No. 18 - offset by three bogeys.
Senior Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) is tied for 48th at 6-over 150 after a 5-over 77 in today's second round. Guezzale was even par through the front nine with birdies on the par-4, 447-yard fourth and the par-5, 600-yard eighth but unfortunately took a quadruple bogey on the par-4, 445-yard 11th and a bogey on No. 15 for a 77.
Senior Puwit Anupansuebsai (Nakhon Phanom, Thailand) shot a 10-over 82 without recording a birdie today.
Travis Vick of Texas holds a one-shot lead at 10-under 134 ahead of Auburn's J.M. Butler (-9).
The Aztecs will need to go low in the final round Wednesday to have a chance to make the top-5 and advance to Scottsdale. SDSU tees off from the first hole at 8:55 a.m. CT (6:55 a.m. PT) with No. 36 Louisville and Kansas State.
