SAN DIEGO – Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson has announced the signing of 5'10" guard Abby Prohaska, a graduate transfer from Notre Dame. Prohaska appeared in 74 games with the Fighting Irish, made 16 starts and played in nine NCAA Tournament games including both games of the 2019 Final Four as a freshman.
"Abby is a fearless competitor that has played on the biggest stage," Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said. "She can play multiple positions and is a tenacious defender. She is a tough, hard-nosed gym rat, who will bring maturity to our program."
The left-handed Prohaska (pro-HASK-kuh) averaged 2.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists while averaging 15.2 minutes per game at Notre Dame. She shot 81.8 percent from the free throw line and had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.32.
"I chose SDSU because of the people and the opportunities," Prohaska explained. "In order to achieve a goal, I believe everyone must feel connected and locked in. I immediately felt that energy and drive to be successful when I met the team. We have an opportunity to put SDSU women's basketball on the map and I couldn't be more excited to be an Aztec!"
This past season, she appeared in 20 games, including all three of the Fighting Irish's NCAA Tournament games, and shot a career-high 50.9 percent from the floor while scoring 3.6 points per game.
In 2020-21, she played in 16 games while starting 13 of them, averaging 4.2 points in a career-high 21.2 minutes per game.
Prohaska utilized a medical redshirt in the 2019-20 season after being diagnosed with a bilateral pulmonary embolism.
As a freshman in 2018-19, she appeared in 38 games with three starts and helped Notre Dame reach the national championship game while averaging 14.4 minutes per game. During their tournament run, Prohaska was the Fighting Irish's first guard off the bench and after the season was named the team's most improved player.
Prohaska was a four-star prep prospect out of Lakota West High School where she was ranked No. 73 in the nation by ESPN HoopGurlz. During her four years there, the Firebirds lost just eight games and won the state championship in 2015. As a senior, she averaged 15.0 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.2 steals and was named the District 15 and Greater Miami Conference Player of the Year.
In her prep career, she set school records for career assists (267) and most steals in a single-season (100), and surpassed the 1,000 point mark for her career. She was named to the All-State First-Team twice and was an All-League First-Team selection three times. She also played soccer for two years and led her conference in goals scored as a freshman.
Prohaska also played for Team USA at the 2016 FIBA U17 World Championships in Zaragoza Spain where they won a bronze medal.
Prohaska is set to graduate from Notre Dame and will be immediately eligible for the 2022-23 season. She majored in visual communication while minoring in digital media marketing and was named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll (2018-19 & 2019-20) and to the Dean's List (Spring 2020 & Fall 2020) twice.
Prohaska is the fourth transfer to commit to SDSU this offseason, joining Sarah Barcello (Marist), Yummy Morris (TCU) and Adryana Quezada (Utah State). The Aztecs will have one of the oldest rosters in the nation next year with seven players in their fifth year.
