SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State dropped two places but is still 24th in the latest D1Softball rankings, which were released Monday on D1softball.com. The Aztecs (35-13, 18-3 MW) won their seventh consecutive series, taking two of three last weekend against Utah State.
SDSU is ahead of No. 25 Ole Miss, and just behind No. 20 Michigan, No. 21 Georgia, No. 22 Louisiana and No. 23 LSU. San Diego State has a victory over current No. 12 Washington and a 7-6, eight-inning loss to current No. 10 Northwestern. Oklahoma remains the top-ranked team with a 48-1 record, while Virginia Tech, Florida State, Arkansas and Arizona State round out the top 5.
The Aztecs are the third-ranked team among Group of 5 programs, training No. 17 UCF and No. 22 Louisiana.
SDSU has been in the D1Softball rankings each of the last six weeks, debuting at No. 25 on April 4, rising to 24th (April 11) and 23rd (April 18) the next two weeks, coming in at No. 24 on April 25, landing at a best of No. 22 last week (May 2) and falling back to 24th today.
San Diego State has won all seven of its MW series this season and is in first place in the league standings at 18-3, two games ahead of Boise State (16-5) and three ahead of UNLV (15-6). The Aztecs have already won series against both Boise State and UNLV, and need just one win this weekend at New Mexico to clinch at least a share of the MW title and the league's automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA tournament, regardless of what BS does in its series at Colorado State. Two victories by SDSU will clinch an outright league championship.
San Diego and the Lobos (25-25, 5-16 MW) will play 6 p.m. MT Thursday, 6 p.m. MT Friday and noon PT Saturday.
