COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- San Diego State's Steve Sugimoto (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) has been named the Mountain West Co-Men's Golfer of the Week, the league announced today. It is the first MW weekly award for Sugimoto.

Sugimoto helped the Aztecs defend their Wyoming Cowboy Classic team title this week with a tournament-record low 39-under-par 825, beating out 24 others teams, including six Mountain West programs.

Sugimoto tied for second out of 128 golfers, the first runner-up finish of his career (he has one victory). He carded a 12-under 204, which was a career-low 54-hole score in his 41st collegiate tournament. All three of Sugimoto's rounds were under par at 67, 71 and 66. The 6-under 66 in the final round was one off a career-low 18-hole score and tied for the third-lowest final round in the field. Sugimoto ended up posting the most birdies (18) in the tournament, while tying for second in par-3 scoring (2.67) and tying for seventh in par-5 scoring (4.50).

On the season, Sugimoto ranks third on the team with a 72.30 stroke average. He's also second in rounds below par (10).

San Diego State next competes April 11-13 in the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, California.
