CHANDLER, Ariz. -- The San Diego State men's golf team holds a nine-stroke lead after the first day of the suspended Wyoming Cowboy Classic Monday at the par-72, 7,334-yard Whirlwind Golf Club. All five Aztecs in the starting lineup will have to play their final few holes Tuesday before beginning the subsequent final round.
SDSU, which won this event last year in a tournament-record 33-under-par 831, is at 24-under par, nine strokes ahead of Long Beach State (-15). Loyola Marymount is in third in the 25-team field at 14-under par, while No. 38 Nevada, Colorado State and UNLV are all tied for fourth at -13.
Puwit Anupansuebsai is tied for second at 8-under after shooting a 4-under 68 in the opener round and so far is at 4-under through 16 holes in the second round. Anupansuebsai has 11 birdies through his first 34 holes, tied with teammate Steve Sugimoto and four others for the most in the 128-man field. Anupansuebsai is tied with two others (Iowa State's Lachlan Barker and Colorado State's Connor Jones) at -8, two shots behind leader Isaac Rodea (-10) of Long Beach State.
Zihao Jin and Sugimoto, meanwhile, are tied for seventh at 6-under. Jin shot a bogey-free 4-under 68 in the first round and is 2-under through 16 holes of his second round. Jin only has one bogey through 34 holes and seven birdies.
Sugimoto carded a 5-under 67 in the opening round with six birdies and a lone bogey. With two holes to play in the second round, Sugimoto is at 1-under with five birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey.
Competing in his first event in the starting lineup, Justin Hastings is tied for 28th at -2. Hastings fired a 1-under 71 in the first round, highlighted by an eagle on the par-4, 337-yard fifth hole. He also sank two birdies and three bogeys. Through 17 holes of his second round, Hastings is at 1-under with four birdies and three bogeys.
Youssef Guezzale is tied for 53rd at +1. Guezzale opened with a 3-under 69 but is sitting at +4 through 16 holes of his second round.
The rest of the second round will be concluded on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at a time to be determined, immediately followed by the final round.
