BREMERTON, Wash. -- The San Diego State men's golf team is in third place after the first day of the 2022 Mountain West Championship at the par-72, 7,115-yard Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Club in Bremerton, Washington. The Aztecs carded a 5-under 283, which is three shots behind first-round leader Colorado State (-8) and one behind runner-up Boise State (-6).

SDSU is also three shots clear of No. 34 Nevada in fourth at even-par and Wyoming is fifth at 2-over 290. Three schools - Utah State, Fresno State and UNLV - are tied for sixth at 5-over 293, while San Jose State (+6), No. 33 New Mexico (+12) and Air Force (+25) round out the first-day scoring.

Seniors Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) and Zihao Jin (Beijing/Rancho Bernardo HS) are tied with four others for fifth at 2-under 70. Guezzale sank five birdies against three bogeys for his 70. Guezzale birdied the par-3, 159-yard fifth and the par-5, 563-yard sixth before a bogey on the par-4, 458-yard seventh stopped his modest birdie streak. He finished the first nine with a birdie on the par-5, 617-yard ninth, but bogeyed the par-5, 549-yard 11th and the par-5, 513-yard 14th to get back to even par. Guezzale, however, birdied the par-4, 355-yard 15th and the par-4, 324-yard 18th to sign for a 70.

Jin, meanwhile, overcame a bogey on the par-4, 362-yard fourth with birdies on No. 6, the par-4, 378-yard 10th and the par-3, 184-yard 16th to match Guezzale, finishing with 14 pars in the process.

Classmate Steve Sugimoto (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) is a shot back in a tie for 15th at 1-under. Sugimoto birdied the par-4, 354-yard second and was at 1-under through his first nine holes but bogeyed both the 10th and the par-3, 251-yard 12th before finishing with birdies on the par-4, 444-yard 13th and the 18th to finish at 1-under.

Freshman Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) logged an even-par 72 in his first MW Championship. Hastings posted four birdies on the day, including No. 9, No. 11, No. 14 and No. 15. He also had two bogeys (No. 5 and No. 13) and double bogeyed No. 12.

The defending Mountain West Champion Puwit Anupansuebsai (Nakhon Phanom, Thailand) was SDSU's non-scorer after shooting a 1-over 73. The three-time all-MW selection rebounded from three consecutive bogeys on No. 6, No. 7 and the par-3, 202-yard eighth and three birdies over the final nine holes. Anupansuebsai notched the birdies on the 10th, 13th and the par-4, 461-yard 17th, with his only blemish on the back nine coming on No. 14.

San Diego State will tee off with Colorado State and Boise State in the final pairing in Saturday's second round, beginning at 11 a.m. PT.
