Aztecs End Season with 21-17 Win over UC Davis

SAN DIEGO – The Aztec lacrosse team (7-8) closed out their season with a 21-17 win over UC Davis (5-7) on senior day Sunday afternoon. SDSU's 21 goals were their most in a game in over four years.

"We talked about how we wanted to end our season and to go out doing what makes us great, which is playing connected and battling," Head coach Kylee White said after the game. "Our seniors have been through some challenging times with COVID, and they stayed dedicated, and their leadership was amazing and helped strengthen the San Diego State culture."

SDSU trailed 5-2 at the end of the first quarter and then went on an 11-2 run to go up 13-7. Davis made a bit of a run in the fourth quarter, pulling within four goals, but never got closer than that,

The Aztecs received four or more points from three different players and were led by Deanna Balsama's five goals and five assists. Balsama finishes the season with 73 points and 62 goals, both of which are single-season school records.

Brook Waddell had four goals and one assist while senior Bailey Brown also added four goals.

After a slow start, SDSU outshot the Aggies 21-11 in the second and third quarters, outscoring them 12-5 in that span.

The Aztecs had a 36-30 advantage in shots against the short-handed Aggies and led 29-24 in shots on goal.

SDSU also got goals from Julia Lytle (3), Camdyn O'Donnell (2), Cailin Young (2) and Courtney Robinson (1). O'Donnell finished with 50 points on the year, tied for the fourth most in program history.

SDSU led in ground balls 22-25 and were led by Shelby Hook's four. Hook also caused a career-high five turnovers, tying her for the second-most in a game all-time. Julia Lytle caused three, which boosted her total to 25 on the year, the second most in a season in school history.

Bailey Brown, SDSU's all-time leader in draw controls in a career, had a team-high seven in her final game as an Aztec.

Goalkeeper Sam Horan had seven saves and finished the season with 177, the second-most in school history. She also had the second-most ground balls (48) in a season.

UC Davis' CJ Urbanic finished with eight saves. The Aggies were led by Grace Gerbhardt's eight points (5 goals and 3 assists).
