SAN DIEGO – The Aztec women's golf team is competing in the Silverado Showdown at the Silverado Resort in Napa, Calif, which is co-hosted by Colorado and Oregon. This will be SDSU's final tournament before the Mountain West Championships April 18-20.
The Aztecs are once again playing against a challenging field. They will be going against four schools in the top six, seven in the top 15 and 14 of the 18 schools competing are ranked in the top 50 in Golfstat's latest rankings.
Schools competing include No. 26 Arizona, No. 6 Arizona State, No. 32 BYU, No. 52 California, Colorado, No. 37 Iowa State, No. 38 Northwestern, No. 2 Oregon, No. 33 Oregon State, San Diego State, No. 5 San Jose State, No. 1 Stanford, No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 29 TCU, No. 15 UCLA, No. 12 USC, No. 48 Washington and Washington State.
The Aztecs have competed against all of those schools this year except for Iowa State, Texas A&M and TCU.
SDSU will roll out the lineup of Anika Sato, Esti Garcia Rubio, Sara Kjellker, Anna Lina Otten and Bernice Olivarez Ilas. The Aztecs have used the same five golfers in the past three tournaments, although the lineup has differed.
Sato was the top Aztec finisher in SDSU's most recent tournament, the PING/ASU Invitational, shooting a 221 (+5). Her six rounds below par are the second-most on the team.
Garcia Rubio is coming off arguably the best tournament of her collegiate career. She tied her low 54-hole score, finishing with a 225 and shot a 72 in the final round, the lowest of the year.
Kjellker has been the Aztecs' best golfer on the year but struggled last week and finished with a 226 (+10). She leads SDSU with a 73.3 average and has a team-high three rounds below 70 on the year.
Otten shot a team-best 72 in the opening round last week and is averaging 76.5 strokes per 18 holes in the spring.
Olivarez Ilas's average score of 74.2 is the second best on the team and she has finished in the top 20 in two of the last three tournaments.
The Silverado course, which was redesigned by PGA Hall of Famer Johnny Miller, is a par 72 and 6,192 yards long. It features multiple water crossing, elevation changes and is lined by historic oak trees.
The forecast calls for morning temperatures in the low 50's with highs in the mid 50's.
