SAN DIEGO – Three San Diego State water polo players, Laurene Padilla, Rose Kanemy and Karli Canale have been recognized by the coaches of the Golden Coast Conference (GCC) with all-conference honors for their play during the 2022 season. The announcement was made from the league office in Aliso Viejo, California, on Tuesday morning.
Padilla is a first-team All-GCC honoree. Kanemy is a second-team performer and earns inclusion on the All-Freshman Team, while Canale garners honorable mention designation.
Padilla, a sophomore utility, finished the regular season second on the team in goals (38), assists (32) and points (70), was third in steals (22) and shots (102), and led the squad with seven field blocks. Through the games of April 13, the Carlsbad High product was tied for fourth among GCC performers in assists, and seventh in points. In the same time frame, in GCC games exclusively, she led the league in assists and assists per game, was tied for seventh in points and tied for sixth in points per game. Padilla scored multiple goals in 14 games, including four of the team's seven league games. She had a single game high of four goals against No. 11 UC Davis, among four hat tricks. In her nine multi-assist games, she recorded a career-high six vs. No. 25 CSUN, which is the second most in a single game in Aztecs' history. This is Padilla's second GCC postseason honor after earning inclusion on the 2021 All-Freshman Team.
A native of Montreal, Kanemy led the team with 106 shots, tied Padilla with 38 goals and was third in assists (30) and points (68). She had 13 steals and equaled Padilla with seven blocks. The attacker was tied for seventh in the league in assists through the games of April 13 and in addition was seventh in points. In the seven-game league season, Kanemy tied for third in points and points per game as well as tied fourth in assists and assists per game. She had 10 games with multiple goals, including a single-game best five goals against No. 25 CSUN, and overall finished with five hat tricks. Three assist efforts against Azusa Pacific and Cal State Monterey Bay highlighted 10 games with multiple assists.
Canale paced the team in goals (42), assists (35), points (77) and steals (48) and among Aztecs with a minimum of 50 shot attempts, her .408 shot percentage topped the squad. A driver in her fifth year in the program, Canale recorded a team-high 12 multi-goal games, including the game winner and a single-game high five tallies versus Cal Baptist. The La Jolla High product totaled seven hat tricks and had a second game winner, in overtime, against Azusa Pacific. Among GCC student-athletes through the game of April 13, she led the league in steals, was fifth in sprint wins and win percentage, sixth in assists and ninth in points. In league games, through April 13, Canale led the league in steals, ranked fifth in sprint wins and win percentage and 10th in assists. This is the second GCC postseason honor for Canale after earning first-team designation last year.
San Diego State is the 4-seed in this weekend's GCC tournament in Riverside, Calif., and will face 5-seed Azusa Pacific at 2 p.m. PT on Friday in a quarterfinal matchup. A victory in that game and SDSU will play in a semifinal contest on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT.
