AZUSA, Calif. – The Aztec track and field team finished the second of four days of competition this week at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California. The Aztecs had four athletes competing in the 5,000m run on Thursday morning and 800m race on Thursday afternoon.
Vanessa Cabello and Naomi Smitham opened things for the Aztecs in the 5,000m run Thursday morning. They each competed in the third heat of the event, and Cabello finished strongly in second place in the heat, finishing with a time of 17:52.98. Smitham finished in the middle of the field of heat three, in 18:20.92.
Lauren Harper and Alex Lomeli took part in the 800m run for the Aztecs. Harper competed in heat four and finished in 2:08.32, which is the 10th fastest time outdoors in San Diego State history. She also set the indoor school record earlier this year in the event, by running 2:07:31. Alex Lomeli also competed for the Aztecs, she finished in 2:11.86, and finished in second in her heat. Both Aztecs also set new PR's in the event with their respective times.
The Aztecs will have the distance team in action again at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday with athletes competing in the 1,500m run at 6:40 p.m. PT. SDSU will also have athletes competing at the prestigious Mt Sac Relays on Friday, and the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State on both Friday and Saturday. Tomorrow's action at the Bryan Clay Invitational will be broadcast on FloTrack ($) and the Mt. Sac Relays on Friday will be broadcast on runnerspace.com($).
