SEASIDE, Calif. – The No. 20 San Diego State water polo team opened its two-game northern California trip with a 13-4 drubbing of the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters on Thursday evening at the CSUMB Aquatics Center.
 
The win improves the Aztecs record to 10-12 on the year, while the Otters fall to 1-14.
 
Senior Samantha Loughlin led the Aztecs' attack with her second hat trick of the season. Karli Canale and Jessica Leckich, also seniors, and sophomore Laurene Padilla each scored twice while Amanda Chambers, Sydney Hurst, Rose Kanemy and Spencer Samuel found the back of the cage once each.
 
San Diego State, which shot .406 on 13-of-32 attempts, scored in spurts finishing with four runs of at least three consecutive goals.
 
Cal State Monterey Bay scored the first goal of the game, at 7:31, and held the lead until Loughlin tied it at the 6:01 mark. From there the Aztecs took a stranglehold on the game.
 
Kanemy and Leckich scored at the 4:47 and 3:00 marks, to complete the team's first three goal run, before the Otters closed the gap to 3-2 with a goal with 43 seconds left in the period.
 
SDSU opened the second quarter with successive scores from Canale, Loughlin and Padilla. The trio struck at 7:28, 6:42 and 5:58, respectively, to push San Diego State's advantage to four goals just over two minutes into the period. The Otters got one back before the half to send the game to the intermission with SDSU up 6-3.
 
Coming out of the break, the Aztecs put together its third three goal run. San Diego State scored at 7:16, 4:47 and 2:13 to increase its lead to 9-3 on strikes from Hurst, Canale and Loughlin. As in the previous two quarters, Cal State Monterey Bay scored the last goal of the period to send the contest to the final quarter with the SDSU up by five goals, 9-4.
 
The goals in the fourth quarter all went to the Aztecs. Padilla got the team into double figures at the 4:47. From there Leckich scored at 3:03, Chambers at 2:46 and Samuel as the buzzer sounded to end the game in SDSU's favor 13-4.
 
Samuel and Kanemy led the game with three assists each. Canale had two assists and Padilla, Chambers, Katie Ratcliff and Delaney Binette assisted on one goal apiece.
 
In goal, Raquel de Pinho (5-9) won the game with five saves and had a steal.
