CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Freshman Jack Townsend (San Diego/Charter School of San Diego) fired back-to-back 69s and is tied for sixth place out of 95 golfers after the first day of the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic Monday at the par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club.
Competing as an individual, Townsend is at 6-under-par 138, tied with three others for sixth and five shots back from 36-hole leader Nicholas Arcement of LSU (-11).
In the first round, Townsend started with a birdie on the par-5, 603-yard 16th hole, and added birdies on the par-4, 461-yard fourth, par-4, 438-yard 10th and par-5, 485-yard 14th holes, while recording just one bogey (par-3, 202-yard 13th). The 69 matched his collegiate low score. Townsend was just as good in the second round with a matching 69, thanks to five birdies, including No. 16 once again, and two bogeys.
Steve Sugimoto (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS), meanwhile, is the Aztecs' top starter and is tied for 25th at 2-under 142. Sugimoto opened with a wild even-par 72 first round, which featured six birdies, four bogeys and two double bogeys. Sugimoto came back with a 2-under 70 in the second round, overcoming a bogey on his opening 13th with four birdies and a final bogey on the par-4, 427-yard ninth hole.
Youssef Guezzale (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla HS) and Jackson Moss (San Diego/Point Loma HS) are each tied for 40th at even-par 144. Guezzale went 1-under 71 and 1-over 73 for the day, totaling seven birdies, three bogeys and a pair of double bogeys over the 36 holes. Moss, meanwhile, carded a 1-over 73 and a 1-under 71 on Monday, highlighted by eagles in both rounds on the 14th.
Freshmen Shea League (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) and Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) are tied for 51st at 2-over 146, while Amadeo Figus (Rome, Italy) is tied for 62nd at 3-over 147.
Other Aztecs in action who will look to improve their placing in Tuesday's final round are Liam Koeneke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) (T-70th, +4), Zihao Jin (Beijing/Rancho Bernardo HS) (T-74th, +5), Puwit Anupansuebsai (Nakhon Phanom, Thailand) (T-74th, +5) and Skyler Ngo (Las Vegas) (T-80th, +6).
SDSU is in a four-way tie for 12th entering tomorrow's final round at 5-over 581 along with Colorado, Denver and Wyoming. LSU is out to a commanding lead at 36-under 540, while Notre Dame is 15 strokes back in second at -21.
The final round of the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic is set for 8:30 a.m. PT Tuesday.
