SAN DIEGO – The Aztec women's golf team will be competing in the Juli Inskter at Meadow Club Invitational Monday and Tuesday (March 7-8).
The 54-hole tournament is co-hosted by the University of San Francisco and San Jose State. The Aztecs will play 36 holes Monday beginning with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start. The final 18 holes will be played Tuesday with an 8:30 shotgun start.
The 13-team field features five schools in the top 50 including No. 1 Stanford and No. 9 San Jose State, who won the Lamkin Invitational, SDSU's home tournament two weeks ago.
Other teams competing include San Francisco, No. 29 BYU, No. 44 Washington, Washington State, Colorado, Cal, Fresno State, Rutgers, UC Davis and No. 32 Oregon State. The Aztecs are currently No. 71 in the latest Golfstat team rankings.
The Meadow Club, located in Fairfax, Calif., was the first course in North American designed by famed course architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie. The par-72 course will be set at 6,157 yards. On Monday, SDSU will start on the 14th hole, a 163-yard par three.
The weather should be ideal with clear skies, minimal wind and high temperatures in the low 60's.
The Aztecs lineup will be Bernice Olivarez Ilas, Sara Kjellker, Anna Lina Otten, Esti Garcia Rubio and Anika Sato.
Olivarez Ilas (Ayala Alabang, Philippines) is the only Aztec to finish in the top four among SDSU golfers in all 11 rounds of the 2021-22 season. She has shot three rounds below par and has an average score of 73.8.
Kjellker (Hollviken, Sweden), the reigning Mountain West Golfer of the Year, has a team best 18-hole average of 73.2 and is coming off a 15th place finish at the Lamkin Invitational (223, +7).
Otten (Neuss, Germany) has been in SDSU's lineup for all four tournaments this year. Her best showing was in the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational where she shot at 221 (+5) and finished tied for 33rd out of 93 golfers.
Garcia Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) competed as an individual at the Lamkin Invitational and shot a 74 in her first two rounds before shooting an 84, battling rain and wind in the final round.
Sato (Utsunomiya, Japan) was the top Aztec finisher at the Lamkin Invitational, shooting a 22 (+6) to tie for 12th place. She has a team-high five rounds under par (out of 11), and her average score of 73.4 is second on the team.
This will be SDSU's second tournament of the spring. They finished 10th (out of 14) at the loaded Lamkin Invitational which featured nine schools ranked in the top 25. The Aztecs shot a 903 (+39) and had Sato (T-12th) and Kjellker (15th) earn top 15 finishes.
