SAN DIEGO – Senior Sydney Hurst scored three times and the San Diego State water polo team improved to 2-1 in the 2022 Aztec Invitational following a 13-5 victory over the Bucknell Bison on Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex.

San Diego State (6-9) used a five-goal barrage in the first half to take control of the game and never looked back to move to 4-1 in its current homestand, which will wrap up on Sunday with a game against Austin College.

In the game's opening period, Delaney Binette got the scoring going with the game's first tally, 53 seconds in.  The Bison responded by scoring twice over a 45 second span to take a 2-1 lead. It would turnout to be Bucknell's first, biggest and only lead of the day.

One minute and 26 seconds after Bucknell's second goal, Laurene Padilla, at the 2:40 mark, scored to tie the game and send it to the second stanza tied at 2-2.

The Aztecs came out in the second period, scored the game's next four goals, a total of five in the quarter and seized control.

The scoring frenzy started at the 6:42 mark with a Rose Kanemy goal. That was followed by back-to-back strikes from Hurst, at 6:14 and 5:33, and Kanemy scored the fourth goal in the run with 3:36 to go until the intermission to stake the Aztecs to a 6-2 advantage.  The Bison got one goal back with 2:58 to play in the second, but Jessica Leckich, with one tick left on the clock gave SDSU its four-goal lead back at 7-3 at the break.

Hurst completed the hat trick to start the third quarter, at the 5:30 mark, and Katie Ratcliff got into the scoring column with just over four minutes to go to make it 9-3.

Sandwiched around Binette's second tally of the game, Bucknell scored twice before the end of the third period and the game went to the final stanza with SDSU up 10-5.

The final quarter was all Aztecs. Lucia Carballo scored 1:03 into the period and Brooke Lee struck twice, at the 3:08 and 0:09 marks, for the final score of 13-5.

Both goalies went the distance with Raquel de Pinho getting the win and stopping eight of the 13 shots that reached her.  Bucknell's Annika Lampen took the loss stopping 6-of-19 shots.
