Lopez Arevalo Qualifies For NCAA Championships

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – San Diego State freshman diver Valentina Lopez Arevalo, in her first Zone E Diving Championships, qualified for the NCAA Championships in Atlanta, Ga., with a ninth-place finish in the platform competition on Wednesday at Northern Arizona University's Wall Aquatic Center.
 
Lopez Arevalo finished with a score of 484.20, after posting a 221.90 in the prelims. She moved from 16th in the prelims to ninth in the finals with the top nine competitors qualifying for next week's NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the McAuley Aquatic Center.
 
Lopez Arevalo was joined in the final by teammates Ximena Lechuga Gonzalez and Gillian Garcia.
 
Lechuga Gonzalez, after totaling 239.60 in the prelims and in 10th place, finished the competition in 12th with a total of 470.10.  Garcia was in 13th after the prelims with a score of 227.50, but slipped to 18th place with a 426.35 total.
 
In addition to the three that made the final, five other Aztecs competed led by Lexi Letts who was 21st in the prelims with a 209.40. Gina Cazares and Emma Duggan were 25th, with a score of 195.70, and 26th, with a 192.30, respectively.
 
Summer Westmoreland, in 30th place, scored a 184.30 and Jules Harrison scored a 160.85 and was the 31st place finisher.
 
Lopez Arevalo joins Klara Thormalm, who will compete in the 100 Breaststroke, at the Championships which get underway on March 16 and run through March 19.
