SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men's basketball team is the No. 3-seed in next week's 2022 Air Force Reserve Mountain West Men's Basketball Championship which will take place at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
The Aztecs, whose first game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network, will open the Championship on Thursday, March 10, at 8:30 p.m. PT against the winner of the No. 6-seed Fresno State versus No. 11-seed San Jose State matchup. The Bulldogs and Spartans play on Wednesday, March 9, at 4 p.m. PT. That game can be seen on the Mountain West Network.
In 22 quarterfinal round games, San Diego State has posted a 17-5 record, but as the No. 3-seed is 0-1, having lost to Colorado State, the sixth seed, 69-64 in the quarterfinal round of the 2007 Mountain West Championship.
The Aztecs have played Fresno State twice in the conference championship tournament and have a 1-1 record against the Bulldogs. In the first matchup, in the 2016 championship game, Fresno State defeated the Aztecs 68-63, but SDSU returned the favor with a 64-52 victory in the quarterfinal of the 2018 tournament and went on to claim the championship that year.
San Jose State, which joined the league prior to the 2013-14 campaign has never advanced past the opening round, and the Aztecs have never met the Spartans in the tournament.
The Aztecs swept the home and home series against both San Jose State and Fresno State this season. SDSU has defeated the Bulldogs in its last six matchups and the Spartans in the last nine meetings.
With a win on Thursday, SDSU would be in the semifinals on Friday, March 11, against the winner of No. 2-seed Colorado State and either seventh-seed Utah State or tenth-seed Air Force. The semifinal game is scheduled to tip at 9 p.m. PT and can be seen on CBS Sports Network. The championship game will be played on Saturday, March 12, at 3 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on CBS.
