Don Kirby Elite Invitational – February 11-12

SAN DIEGO – The Aztec track and field team competes at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational this weekend, their second of three consecutive meets at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The meet will be streamed on FloTrack, which requires a $30 monthly subscription.
 
The Aztecs will have 24 athletes competing across 13 events. The meet gets started Friday with the weight throw at 1:30 p.m. PT, then will be followed by the long jump at 2 p.m. PT and the high jump will be at 2 p.m. PT as well. The first running event is the unseeded 200m at 1:55 p.m. PT with the seeded 200m being run at 6:10 p.m. PT.
 
On Saturday, the first SDSU event is the 60m hurdles qualifying round at 8:45 a.m. PT where the top eight times will advance to the semifinals which is run at 10:10 a.m. PT and the finals are at 11:40 a.m. PT. The 60m dash qualifying round is at 9:15 a.m. PT and the semifinals are at 10:30 a.m. PT and the finals are at 12:35 p.m. PT. The remaining track schedule is the mile at 11:05 a.m. PT, the 400m at 12:10 p.m. PT, the 800m at 12:55 p.m. PT and the 4x400m relay at 1:30 p.m.. Saturday's field events are the shot put (9 a.m. PT), pole vault (B section at 7:30 a.m. PT, A section at 11 a.m. PT), and the triple jump (9:30 a.m. PT).
 
Aztec Tidbits
• Five Aztecs will be making their 2022 debut this weekend: Emily Burd (one mile), Lauren Harper (800m run), Alex Lomeli (800m run), Carlene Masar (one mile) and Destiny Washington (60m hurdles).
• Through just two meets this season, the Aztecs have already added 12 marks to their indoor record book's top ten. Last week at the UNM Collegiate Classic Jade Cany (4th, 41-08.75) and Simone Johnson (8th, 40-02.75) qualified in the triple jump, Sara Absten had the sixth best pentathlon score (3,851 points) and 10th best long jump (19-04.25) and Jenna Fee Feyerabend had the ninth best pentathlon score (3,740 points) and tied her mark in the high jump of 5-05.75 which is the eighth best. Jordyn Bryant had the ninth best mark in shot put (45-03.75) and weight throw (52-01.00) and Ashley Callahan had the ninth best indoor pole vault mark (13-07.75).
• Callahan's vault of 13-07.75 (4.16m) was less than an inch away from the SDSU freshman record set by Bonnie Draxler.
• For the second straight week, the Aztecs had a 4x400m relay team record a top ten mark. Jalyn Harris, Aisha Watt, Rhea Hoyte and Nyjari McNeil finished in 3:41.25, good for sixth all-time. Hoyte, Harris and McNeil, along with Sakura Roberson finished in 3:39.44, the second best mark, the week prior at the Texas Tech Open.
• In the Texas Tech Open, Jada Moore ran the 60m dash in 7.442 seconds, the eighth fastest time in program history. She also set a new PR in the 200m dash (24.08).
 
Season Preview Notes
• The Aztecs won the Mountain West Outdoor Championship last year with 161 points, their most in the Outdoor Championships since 2013.
• SDSU has won three of the last four and five of the last eight MW Outdoor Championships.
• Head Coach Shelia Burrell won her fifth Mountain West Coach of the Year award last season.
• SDSU won seven gold medals at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships last year. Jada Moore won three golds (100m, 200m and 4x100m relay).
• The Aztecs had 14 All-Mountain West honorees last season and return 13 of them, losing only Maya Brosch (400m hurdles & 4x400m relay) to graduation.
• The SDSU 4x100m relay team qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships last year and all four runners return (Danae Dyer, Tai McDonald, Jada Moore and Aisha Watt). The Aztecs have had a representative in 23 of the last 24 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
