IRVINE, Calif. – The San Diego State water polo team split its two Sunday games at the 2022 Barbara Kalbus Invitational, Defeating Pomona-Pitzer 9-6, but dropped its game to No. 18 Loyola Marymount 11-5. Senior Karli Canale led the Aztecs with five goals in the two games.

Senior Karli Canale totaled a game-high three goals to lead the Aztecs over Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Sunday afternoon. Canale, the lone Aztecs to score multiple goals, also led the team and the game with five shots.
 
Laurene Padilla picked up the first tally just 16 seconds in and San Diego State would never trail. Pomona-Pitzer tied the game at the 5:19 mark and on Canale's first goal, with 1:48 remaining in the quarter, SDSU retook the lead and held a 2-1 advantage heading into the second period.
 
The Sagehens got the equalizer at the 6:06 mark of the second period, but the Aztecs took control from there, scoring four times before the intermission. Canale picked up her second goal with 4:51 to go and Lucia Carballo added a tally with 2:58 left in the second. A Pomona-Pitzer goal made the score 4-3 with 1:13 to play, but back-to-back scores from Rose Kanemy with 45 seconds left and Amanda Chambers who scored with just four seconds to go, gave the Aztecs a 6-3 lead at the break.
 
San Diego State scored twice coming out of halftime, but Sagehens picked up the first goal of the second half to cut the lead to 6-4. Klara Goldstein got a goal at 2:06 and Faith Cerussi joined her in the scoring column with 56 seconds left in the third to send the game to the final period with SDSU up 8-4.
 
Pomona-Pitzer got the first goal of the final quarter to cut the Aztecs lead to three, 8-5. Canale's hat trick goal came with 3:40 left on the clock before the Sagehens scored with 1:03 for the final score of 9-6.
 
Kanemy led the team with two assists, while Kendall Houck, Danni Croteau, Canale and Cerussi were credited with a save each.
 
Zoe Morgan went the distance in goal letting six goals in and making eight saves to earn the win.

In its first game of the day, the LMU Lions jumped on the Aztecs with four goals in the first period and never looked back.
 
Down 4-0 after eight minutes, Laurene Padilla got SDSU on the scoreboard with a tally at the 7:35 mark of the second period. But Loyola Marymount scored the last two goals of the quarter and led 6-1 at the break.
 
The Lions extended its advantage to 9-1 in the first seven-plus minutes of the third stanza before San Diego State answered with two goals in the final 30 seconds of the period. Spencer Samuel scored with 28 seconds left and Karli Canale picked up the first of her two goals with four ticks on the clock.
 
Down six goals heading into the final quarter, Canale scored with 6:48 to play to make the score 9-4. The Lions answered at the 5:22 mark, before Lucia Carballo found the back of the cage with 4:51 to play. Loyola Marymount scored the final goal of the contest to make the final score 11-5.
 
Kanemy, Amanda Chambers and Zoe Morgan were credited with an assist each.
 
Morgan, who played 11:53 in goal, gave up three goals, made three saves and had a steal. Raquel de Pinho was the starter, surrendered eight goals and made four saves in 20:07 and was tagged with the loss.
