Mountain West Indoor Championships – February 24-26

SAN DIEGO – The Aztec track and field team is competing at the Mountain West Indoor Championships Feb. 24-26 at the Albuquerque Convention Center, this third consecutive meet at this venue. The meet will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.
 
The Aztecs placed second at the last Mountain West Indoor Championships, which took place in 2020. They currently have 11 marks that rank in the top five in the conference.
 
The meets gets started Thursday Feb. 24 with the pentathlon at 10 a.m. PT where Sara Absten, Jenna Fee Feyerabend and Ruthie Grant-Williams will be competing. Absten has the second-highest pentathlon score on the year (3,740) and Feyerabend has the sixth (3,740).
 
Friday gets started with the long jump (Absten, Spizewski & Thompson) at 12 p.m. PT and will also have the qualifying rounds for the 60m, 200m 400m, 800m, mile and 60m hurdles. The Aztecs will also be competing in the high jump (Cany & Feyerabend) Friday at 3:15 p.m.
 
On Saturday, in addition to the finals of the events listed above there is the pole vault (10:30 a.m.) triple jump (10:30 a.m.). The meet will end with the 4x400m relay, an event the Aztecs won in 2020 while earning a spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
 
Aztec Tidbits
• Pole vaulter Ashley Callahan was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week after clearing 14-00.00 at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational. This set a new SDSU record for freshman and is the highest mark in the conference this season.
Lauren Harper, running in her first indoor meet in nearly two years set a school record in the 800m dash with a time of 2:08.24.
• In just three meets, the Aztecs have added 12 marks to their indoor record book's top ten: Lauren Harper (800m 1st, 2:08.24), Ashley Callahan (T-4th pole vault, 14-00.00), Jalyn Harris (5th 200m, 23.74), Sara Absten (6th pentathlon), Simone Johnson (6th triple jump, 40-07.00), Emily Burd (7th mile, 5:09.02), Jada Moore (8th 60m dash, 7.442), Jenna Fee Feyerabend (T-8th high jump, 5-05-75 & 9th pentathlon, 3,740 points) and Absten (10th long jump 19-04.25). SDSU has also run the 2nd and sixth fastest 4x400m relay times.
 
Mountain West Indoor Championship Notes
• The Mountain West didn't host the Indoor Championships last year.
• San Diego State has finished in the top four at the Mountain West Indoor Championships every year since 2010 and in the top three in eight of the last nine times.
• The Aztecs finished second at the 2020 Mountain West Indoor Championships, scoring 126.5 points, their most at the Mountain West Indoor Championships since 2004.
• Sprinter Jalyn Harris has medaled in the 400m dash at the Mountain West Indoor Championships three times. She currently has the 4th fastest time in the Mountain West in the 200m (23.81).
• The Aztecs have won the indoor pole vault title six times in a row and eight of the last nine. In total, SDSU has won 27 conference titles in the pole vault out of a possible 41 tries (indoor and outdoor).
• SDSU qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 4x400m relay in 2020 before the meet was canceled due to COVID-19. It was the first time in school history the 4x4 team made the NCAA Championships.
