LA QUINTA, Calif. -- The San Diego State men's golf team is tied for ninth out of 24 teams at The Prestige following a 12-over 296 first round Monday at the par-71, 7,100-yard Greg Norman Couse at PGA WEST.

The Aztecs, who are ranked 44th in the latest Golfstat ratings, faltered late but are just five strokes out of the top 5 with Princeton. No. 18 Vanderbilt and No. 48 Oregon lead after one round at 3-over 287, while No. 25 LSU (+4), Long Beach State (+5) and No. 14 Kansas (+7) round out the top 5. Colorado State (+9), UC Davis (+11) and SMU (+11) are just ahead of SDSU.

Playing with SMU and No. 5 Pepperdine (+21), San Diego State appeared to be heading for a top-5 first day, but its four counting scorers on the day went a combined 5-over par over the final three holes.

Steve Sugimoto (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) led the Aztecs on the first day after firing an even-par 71 when the average score for the 119 finishing golfers was 75.42. Sugimoto was tied for the lead through 15 holes at 2-under following birdies on the par-4, 477-yard third hole, the par-4, 337-yard 11th and the par-4, 443-yard 14th, and a bogey on the par-4, 470-yard second, but unfortunately he bogeyed both the par-5, 537-yard 16th and the par-4, 461-yard 18th to finish in a tie for ninth.

Zihao Jin (Beijing/Rancho Bernardo HS) is tied for 32nd after carding a 3-over 74. Jin was 4-over through seven holes but went 1-under over his final 11 holes with a birdie on No. 11 and 10 pars. Jin (-1) was the only SDSU golfer to shoot under par on the back nine.

Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) is tied for 53rd following a 4-over 75. Lague got through the first nine with eight pars and a bogey on No. 3 but struggled to a 3-over 39 on the back nine with a lone birdie on the par-5, 566-yard 12th and four bogeys.

Puwit Anupansuebsai (Nakhon Phanom, Thailand) is a shot back of Lague in a tie for 65th at +5 (76). Anupansuebsai was one of three San Diego State golfers to birdie the 11th, but it was his only one. He logged four bogeys and a double bogey on the 16th.

Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) couldn't overcome a bogey-quadruple bogey-bogey-bogey start and finished with a 12-over 83, which is tied for 115th.

Colorado State's Davis Bryant and Vanderbilt's Reid Davenport are tied for the lead at 2-under 69, while six others are a shot back at -1.

The Aztecs begin the second round of The Prestige at 7:40 a.m. PT and will tee off from the 10th hole.

Two other SDSU golfers - Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) and Skyler Ngo (Las Vegas) - are also competed as individuals in The Prestige Individual Invitational on the par-72, 7,145-yard Coral Mountain Golf Club. Hastings shot a 4-over 76 and is tied for 37th out of 62 players, while Ngo is tied for 46th at 5-over 77.
