Aztecs Host San Diego, 31st Annual Campbell/Cartier Classic This Weekend
San Diego State continues its 11-game homestand to start the season Wednesday when it welcomes San Diego to SDSU Softball Stadium, before playing host to the 31st annual Campbell/Cartier Classic this weekend.

Following the 6 p.m. PT contest with the Toreros on Wednesday night, the Aztecs (4-1) will play CSUN at 6 p.m. PT Thursday, Army West Point at 5:30 p.m. PT Friday, Army West Point (4:30 p.m. PT) and Southern Utah (7 p.m. PT) on Saturday, and California Baptist at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

The San Diego State University Campbell/Cartier Classic is an annual event held in the memory of former Aztec softball players Susanne Campbell and Karin Cartier. Campbell and Cartier lost their lives during the 1991 softball season in a single-car accident that took place in Rosarito, Mexico. It left a lasting mark on teammates, coaches and the program.

To pay tribute to Susanne Campbell and Karin Cartier, the San Diego State softball team renamed the SDSU Spring Classic in 1994 to the Campbell/Cartier Classic in memory of their friendship and fine athletic ability. The 2022 tournament will be the 31st annual classic after there was no tournament last year because of COVID protocols.

The Aztecs went 4-1 last weekend at the San Diego State Season Kickoff, including a 2-1 mark against teams that made the 2021 NCAA tournament.

Isabella Espinoza (.467, 4 R) was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week on Tuesday, while Maggie Balint (1-1, 1.08 ERA, 24 K, 1 BB, 13.0 IP) was named the MW Pitcher of the Week.

Jeweliana Perez (.417) and Mac Barbara (.412, 2 HR, 4 RBI) are also hitting above .400 (min. 5 AB) for a team that is hitting .316, while the Aztec pitching staff has combined for a 1.03 ERA in 34 innings.
