SAN DIEGO – The Aztec women's basketball team (9-11, 3-6) fell to New Mexico (18-5, 9-1) 67-58 Saturday afternoon inside Viejas Arena.
Similar to their previous meeting with the Lobos, the Aztecs rallied after falling behind big early in the fourth quarter. On Saturday, SDSU trailed by 18 points with 9:28 left and then went on a scoring spree to pull within six points with 4:51 remaining before their cold shooting returned.
Sophia Ramos nearly scored half of SDSU's points and finished with 27 points and six made threes. Mercedes Staples had 12 points and
Mallory Adams had 11 points and nine rebounds. Kim Villalobos hauled in 11 rebounds but struggled from the field.
SDSU began the game up 13-3 after hitting their first three threes, but the Lobos responded with a 9-0 run and held a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was an offensive struggle for both squads as they combined to score just 13 points on 5-for-30 shooting.
The Lobos scored the first 11 points of the second half to push their lead to 36-21. The Aztecs had a stretch where they made just 2 of 22 field goals.
After SDSU went on their run to pull within six, they went on another cold stretch where they were 1-for-10 from the field.
The Lobos had four players in double-digits and were led by Shaiquel McGruder's 18 points. Antonia Anderson had 15 points and 13 rebounds.
The Aztecs forced 18 turnovers which led to 19 points and had an 18-9 edge on the offensive glass, getting seven offensive rebounds from Kim Villalobos.

THE NOTE
With Sophia Ramos' 27 points, she moved past Quenese Davis (2007-10) into ninth place on SDSU's all-time scoring list. She now has 1,378 points.
