SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State football head coach Brady Hoke has announced the addition of quarterback Braxton Burmeister to the program. Burmeister (Virginia Tech) is the sixth FBS transfer to become an Aztec, joining offensive lineman Cade Bennett (Oklahoma State), defensive lineman Deven Lamp (Tulsa), linebacker Cooper McDonald (Washington), tight end Mark Redman (Washington) and defensive lineman Justus Tavai (Hawai'i).
A local product out of La Jolla Country Day in La Jolla, California, Burmeister brings Power 5 experience to San Diego State with stops at Oregon (2017-18) and Virginia Tech (2020-21). Burmeister has started 20 times and appeared in 29 games over his career, combining to throw for 3,020 yards with 19 touchdowns against 11 interceptions, completing 239 of his 426 attempts (56.1 pct.), while rushing for 834 yards and seven touchdowns. Burmeister went 8-7 in his two years at Virginia Tech, completing 190 of his 339 passes (56.0 pct.) for 2,647 yards and 16 touchdowns with five interceptions, and rushing for 690 yards and four touchdowns. In 2021, Burmeister was 142-for-255 (55.7 pct.) for 1,960 yards and 14 touchdowns with just four interceptions, while rushing 116 times for 508 yards (4.4 avg.) and two scores. Burmeister sat out the 2019 season at Virginia Tech because of NCAA transfer rules after playing 11 games at Oregon in 2017-18. He started five times as a true freshman in 2017, passing for 330 yards and two touchdowns.
Burmeister set CIF San Diego Section career records in total yards (14,972), passing yards (11,512), passing touchdowns (127) and completions (853) in four varsity seasons at La Jolla Country Day, being named a first-team Parade All-American following his senior season. A four-star recruit by Rivals out of high school, Burmeister originally picked Oregon over offers from San Diego State, Florida, Utah, Washington, South Carolina, Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon State, Boston College, Illinois and Indiana.
The six transfers come to a program that finished 25th in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll. Playing in its 99th season of football, SDSU finished with a school-record 12 victories, becoming one of just 10 programs nationally with at least 12 wins in 2021. Only four teams had more wins than San Diego State, including national champion Georgia, and CFP teams Alabama and Cincinnati.
The Aztecs played five teams who reached double-digit victories on the season, securing wins over Pac-12 Champion/Rose Bowl participant Utah (10-4), UTSA (12-2) and Air Force (10-3). SDSU, which was ranked in every CFP poll in 2021, played all 14 of its games away from its own market, including eight "home games" two hours from campus at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
San Diego State kicks off its 100th season of football on Saturday, Sept. 3 against Arizona, hosting its first game at Bashor Field at Snapdragon Stadium.
