SAN DIEGO -- A pair of former Aztecs are just a win away from an appearance in Super Bowl LVI.
Offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill (2013-16) started for San Francisco and played all 53 snaps on offense and three snaps on special teams in their last-second playoff victory over top-seeded Green Bay. Brunskill's 49ers will face divisional foe, the Los Angeles Rams, in SoFi Stadium, Sunday afternoon, for a chance to play in the same stadium for Super Bowl LVI.
Defensive lineman Alex Barrett (2013-16) is on San Francisco's practice squad. Offensive lineman Jacob Capra (2019-20) is on Buffalo's practice squad and did not appear in Buffalo's overtime loss to Kansas City.
In the NBA, forward Jalen McDaniels (2018-19) appeared in a pair of games for Charlotte before suffering an ankle injury. McDaniels averaged 7.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.0 block. So far this season, he is averaging 6.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.5 steals and 0.4 blocks per game. Guard Malachi Flynn (2020) did not play for Toronto. On the season, he is averaging 2.8 points, 1.0 rebound, 0.9 assists, 0.4 steals and 0.1 blocks per game. Forward Kawhi Leonard (2010-11) is on the Los Angeles Clippers, but is sitting out while recovering from a Torn ACL suffered during last season's playoffs.
On the PGA Tour, J.J. Spaun (2009-12) tied for 25th at 12-under-par in The American Express, while Scott Piercy (1999-2001) tied for 71st in the event at 6-under-par. Xander Schauffele (2013-15), who is ranked seventh in the world, will play at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in nearby La Jolla this weekend along with Spaun and Piercy.
