SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women's water polo team, which reached the championship game of the 2021 Golden Coast Conference tournament, is No. 15 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association's (CWPA) preseason rankings. The announcement was made from the CWPA office in Bridgeport, Pa., on Wednesday afternoon.
All but one program in the Golden Coast Conference (GCC) appeared in the initial CWPA poll, with five teams ranked and two receiving votes. Joined by Fresno State at No. 10 and Pacific at No. 13, the Aztecs are one of three GCC teams in the top 15 of the rankings. This is the third time since 2015 that the Aztecs are No. 15 in the CWPA preseason poll. The program was also No. 15 in the 2015 and 2017 preseason poll. The only better preseason ranking for SDSU came in 2018 when the team entered the season No. 12.
San Diego State, which saw its opening weekend of competition against preseason No. 6-ranked Hawai'i (Friday, Jan. 14) and Hawai'i and No. 17-ranked Loyola Marymount at the Rainbow Invitational (Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 15-16) in Honolulu, Hawaii canceled. The Aztecs first competition is now scheduled to be in the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif., on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 12 & 13.
