SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State athletic department announced Tuesday that the Aztec football program has postponed the start of spring practice due to contact tracing out of an abundance of caution for the health, safety and well-being of the department's student-athletes, coaches and staff.
"The health and well-being of our student-athletes remains our top priority," head coach Brady Hoke said. "Due to contact tracing we have pushed back the start of spring ball. The good news is that no student-athletes are part of the contact tracing. They will continue to work out and we will be able to have a complete spring season.
"I have said on several occasions how proud I am of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and university officials on how they have been able to navigate these unusual times. Because of their remarkable efforts we were able to play games in eight consecutive weeks last season. At the appropriate time, I look forward to starting spring practice and begin our on-field work toward our 22nd championship."
SDSU was scheduled to start its spring practice on Tuesday following a postponement Monday because of weather. Now San Diego State is expected to resume its spring season, which consists of 15 practices, in the coming weeks.
One of just six teams to play in each of the final eight regular-season games in 2020 and one of only three Mountain West schools, the Aztecs went 4-4 last year with their four losses coming to teams that went a combined 29-6 (.829).
