SAN DIEGO – The Aztec women's basketball team (4-4) will be back on the road when they play at California Baptist (5-1) in Riverside, Calif. Wednesday evening at 6p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ which requires a subscription.
 
Aztec Tidbits
• SDSU lost to San Diego last Wednesday 63-51 despite 19 points from Sophia Ramos and 16 from Asia Avinger.
• Avinger's (Cerritos, Calif.) 16 points against the Toreros was a career-high. She has scored in double-digits in five of SDSU's eight games and is averaging 12.2 points over the Aztecs' last five contests. She was named the Mountain West Preseason Freshman of the Year for the second straight season after missing all of last season with an injury.
• Mercedes Staples (Centerville, Utah) is shooting 55.6 percent from three this year, which leads the conference and is eighth best in the nation. Sophia Ramos is shooting 47.4 percent from deep, second in the Mountain West and 26th in the nation.
• In her Aztec career, Staples is making 40.9 percent (45-110) of her threes, the best in school history (minimum 100 attempts).
• SDSU has three active players in the top seven all-time in career three-point percentage. Staples leads the way at 40.9 percent, Isabela Hernandez is third (38.6%, 49-127) and Sophia Ramos is seventh (35.7%, 114-319).
• As a team, the Aztecs are shooting 38.9 percent from three. That leads the Mountain West and is the 15th highest percentage in the nation.
• On the defensive side of the ball, SDSU is holding its opponents to 35.6 percent shooting from the field, second best in the conference.
• The Aztecs have held their opponents under 40 percent shooting five times and are 4-1 in those games.
• Sophia Ramos is one of four active players in the nation with at least 1,200 points, 400 rebounds, 300 assists and 100 steals in her career. She is the only one of those four who has played in less than 85 games.
• Two of SDSU's remaining three non-conference games will be at home. After playing at California Baptist, the Aztecs will host UC San Diego Dec. 17 and then Ohio State on Dec. 21. The Buckeyes are currently ranked No. 20 in the AP poll and No. 21 in the WBCA Coaches poll.
• The Aztecs officially joined the Jordan Brand family this season, becoming just the ninth women's basketball program in the Jordan lineup.
 
Opponent Notebook (California Baptist)
• The Lancers are 5-1 on the year.
• They went 26-1 last year and 14-0 in the WAC and advanced to the third round of the WNIT.
• Their only loss was an 80-72 defeat at No. 15 Oregon State.
• They are currently on a four-game win streak with victories over UC Irvine (93-88, OT), UC Santa Barbara (68-56), TCU (91-77) and Pepperdine (63-57).
• Caitlyn Harper is averaging 20.2 points per game while making 54.9 percent of her free throws.
• Ane Olaeta is scoring 17.5 points per game while dishing out 8.8 assists per game.
• Georgia Dale leads the team with 8.0 rebounds per game and is shooting 56 percent from three.
• They shoot 44.3 percent from the field and hold their opponents to 35.7 percent shooting.
• They are being outrebounded 44.2-40.2 (-4).
• Head coach Jarrod Olsen (10th season) entered the year with a 211-71 all-time record at CBU. He has won the last two WAC Coach of the Year awards.
 
Series Notes
• The Aztecs lead the all-time series 2-1
• This is the fourth straight season the Aztecs and Lancers have met. SDSU won the first two, both by double-digits, and then CBU won last year 75-71 in San Diego.
• The Aztecs have averaged 78 points per game in their three games against California Baptist.
• SDSU's lone game at CBU was an 80-68 win Dec. 19, 2019, where the Aztecs overcame a 10-point second half deficit. Sophia Ramos scored 30 points, which was a career-high at the time, on 9-for-14 shooting.
