SAN DIEGO – Three San Diego State men's tennis players recorded singles victories on Saturday during the second wave of action at the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic on the University of San Diego campus.
Squaring off against competitors from UC San Diego, Jules Auffray (Hyeres, France), Judson Blair (Salem, Ore.) and Roni Rikkonen (Tampere, Finland) were all triumphant on the courts of Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
Rikkonen won his second straight after pinning a 6-1, 6-2 defeat on the Tritons' Eric Silberman, while Blair accomplished the same feat with 6-4, 6-3 decision over Pelayo Rodriguez. In addition, Auffray rebounded from a loss Friday to post a 6-2, 6-3 conquest of Zach Ermert.
Conversely, the Aztecs came up empty in doubles action against a pair of Navy tandems. Blair and Rikkonen fell victim to the Midshipmen duo of Jack Dabek and Finn Garner, 6-3, while Auffray joined forces with Chris Papa of San Diego Christian, but the pairing suffered an identical fate.
SDSU also completed its run at the Jack Kramer Collegiate Invitational on Saturday in Rolling Hills Estates, California. The Aztec duo of Victor Castro and Joe Tyler raised their record to 7-2 on the year with an 8-3 triumph over Cal Poly's Joseph Leather and Colter Smith in a consolation match. However, Johannes Seeman was not as fortunate in his consolation singles encounter with another Mustang opponent, Noah Berry, who prevailed in a tough battle via super-tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-6, 11-9.
Select San Diego State players will be back on the courts Sunday at the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic to lock horns with a delegation of USD and San Diego Christian participants in singles competition, starting at approximately 12:45 p.m. PT.
