SAN DIEGO - The Aztec women's basketball team returns home to host crosstown foe San Diego Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. inside Viejas Arena. The game will be streamed on the Mountain West Network with Chris Ello on the call.
Aztec Tidbits
• SDSU competed in Cal's Raising the B.A.R. Invitational last weekend. They went 0-2 with losses to Ole Miss (62-48) and Furman (71-62).
• The Aztecs were 12-for-24 from three against Furman, their second time this season making 12 or more threes in a game (Cal State Los Angeles, 11-9-21).
• Mercedes Staples scored 20 points and made a career-high six three-pointers against Furman.
• Staples is now shooting 55.6 percent from three this year, which leads the conference and is eighth best in the nation. Sophia Ramos is shooting 48.6 percent from deep, third in the Mountain West and 33rd in the nation.
• In her Aztec career, Staples is shooting 40.9 percent (45-110) from three, the best in school history (minimum 100 attempts).
• SDSU has three active players in the top seven all-time in career three-point percentage. Staples leads the way at 40.9 percent, Isabela Hernandez is third (38.6%, 49-127) and Sophia Ramos is seventh (35.8%, 113-316).
• As a team, the Aztecs are shooting 40.5 percent from three. That leads the Mountain West and is the 12th highest percentage in the nation.
• On the defensive side of the ball, SDSU is holding its opponents to 28.9 percent shooting from three.
• Sophia Ramos is one of five active players in the nation with at least 1,100 points, 400 rebounds, 300 assists and 100 steals in her career while playing in less than 100 games. She is the only one of those five who also has a career free throw percentage over 80.
• Three of SDSU's remaining four non-conference games will be at home: Dec. 1 vs. San Diego, Dec. 17 vs. UC San Diego 7 Dec. 21 vs. Ohio State who is currently ranked No. 18 in the nation.
• Point guard Asia Avinger (Cerritos, Calif.) was named the Mountain West Preseason Freshman of the Year for the second straight season. She missed all of last season with an injury.
• The Aztecs officially joined the Jordan Brand family this season, becoming just the ninth women's basketball program in the Jordan lineup.
Opponent Notebook (San Diego)
• The Toreros are 4-2 on the year.
• They are 1-1 on the road. This will be their first road game since Nov. 14, a 66-46 win at Idaho.
• They have wins over two Mountain West schools: Air Force (52-46) and Fresno State (68-64)
• They average 14.7 steals per game, fourth in the nation.
• USD is also sixth in the nation in turnovers forced per game, a whopping 25.7.
• They have balanced scoring with no players averaging double-digits. They have nine players average between 5.0 and 10 points per game.
• Jordyn Edwards averages 3.4 steals per game, 14th in the nation.
• Head coach Cindy Fisher is in her 17th year at USD. She has guided the Toreros to six 20-win seasons in the past 10 years.
Series Notes
• The Aztecs lead the all-time series 30-14.
• SDSU won at USD last year 64-56 after jumping out to a 20-6 first quarter lead. Tea Adams led the Aztecs with 19 points on 9-for-10 shooting and Sophia Ramos had 15 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.
• The Aztecs are 20-7 all-time against USD at home.
• SDSU won the first 17 meetings and 24 of the first 25 games against the Toreros.
• Since 2002, USD leads the series 13-6.
