SAN DIEGO – San Diego State senior Klara Thormalm has been named the Mountain West Conference's Swimmer of the Week for the week ending on Nov. 21. The announcement was made from the conference office in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Tuesday morning.
A native of Vetlanda, Sweden, Thormalm competed in eight races last week, recorded five wins, has two second place finishes and a sixth-place clocking at the Phill Hansel Invitational in Houston, Texas. Three of her five victories came in relays and in addition, she recorded three B-cut times.
On Thursday, Thormalm opened the three-day meet as part of the winning 200 Free Relay team. Along with teammates Meredith Smithbaker, Sammy Geyer and Lizzie Menzmer, she posted a time of 1:30.15. She earned a second-place finish in the 50 Free with a B-cut time of 22.65. Her third event of the day was the 400 Medley Relay, where with Riley Tapley, Cassie Phillips and Mia Ryan, Thormalm earned her second win of the day in a time of 3:36.59, which was more than four seconds faster than the second-place time.
On Friday, Thormalm, with Tapley, Phillips and Menzmer won the 200 Medley Relay by more than three and a half seconds with a 1:37.86 clocking. She earned her second B-cut of the meet with a 59.25 in a win in the 100 Breaststroke. She returned to the pool in the 100 Back and touched in 55.11 and a sixth-place finish.
The last day of competition, Saturday, Thormalm won her fifth race, the 200 Breaststroke in 2:09.63, her third B-cut time and she wrapped up her weekend with a second in the 400 Free Relay with teammates Smithbaker, Geyer and Kristina Murphy. The squad had a time of 3:19.56.
For her collegiate career, this is the third Swimmer of the Week honor for Thormalm, the second of this season and the second for an Aztecs this year.
