SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State swimming and diving team returns to the competition pool this week when it competes in the Phill Hansel Invitational from Thursday, Nov. 18 through Saturday, Nov. 20, in the University of Houston's CRWC Natatorium in Houston, Texas.

In its last competition, on Oct. 22 and 23, the Aztecs pushed the program's dual-match winning streak to 32 straight in a quad-dual formatted event. SDSU defeated Grand Canyon, Seattle U and Loyola Marymount twice each in the two-day event. Meredith Smithbaker was named Mountain West Freshman of the Week after recording four wins, a second place and the top time in an event in which San Diego State's swimmers all competed as an exhibition.

The last time the team swam in an invitational was at the Chick-Fil-A Invitational in Fresno, Calif., on Oct. 8 and 9. San Diego State finished in second place behind the Cal Bears and ahead of UCLA, Fresno State, Washington State and San Jose State. In seven swims, Klara Thormalm won both the individual races she competed in and in five relays had a first, second, third, fourth and fifth place finish, and was named the Mountain West Swimmer of the Week for her effort.

Since the start of the 2017-18 season, San Diego State has competed in 10 regular-season invitational meets and has never finished outside the top-3. It has three first place finishes, five second places and a pair of third place finishes.
