SAN DIEGO – San Diego State's deep run in the singles and doubles brackets at the ITA Division I Women's Southwest Regional Championships came to an end Saturday, but the Aztecs posted a 5-2 record in unbracketed matches against the region's best players to record another successful day at the Branes Tennis Center.
"The Aztecs had a really solid day on the third day of the ITA regional," head coach Peter Mattera said. "We are very pleased with our performance. We picked up a lot of good wins against really good players. I could not be more excited with this team."
Senior Bunyawi Thamchalwat, seeded second in the event, advanced to the quarterfinal round of the singles bracket, but was eliminated by (17-32) Snow Han of USC (players seeded nine through 16 and 17 through 32 are not distinguished by seeds but are placed in the bracket alphabetically in those seeded positions) in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles action, Thamchalwat and Tamara Arnold, seeded fourth in the event, won their first match of the day but fell in the quarterfinals. The Aztec duo defeated Sasha Vagramov and Ava Catanzarite of UCLA, 7-6 (2) in the round of 16. Later in the day, Thamchalwat and Arnold were knocked out by 5th-seeded Savannah Broadus and Janice Tjen of Pepperdine, 6-2.
San Diego State players made major noise in unbracketed matches, posting a 5-2 record and picking up several notable wins. Arnold, Alicia Melosch and Cécile Morin all recorded straight-set victories, while Regina Pitts and Nnena Nadozie were winners in three-sets.
