SAN DIEGO – With highly seeded players in both the singles and double field, the San Diego State women's tennis team opens play in the ITA Division I Women's Southwest Regional Championships on Thursday at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

The event, which is co-hosted by San Diego State and San Diego and continues through Monday, includes 16 schools from the region and features some of the top singles and doubles teams in the nation competing in one 128-person singles draw and one 64-teams doubles draw. The event is free to the public.

San Diego State has two seeded singles players, including the number two seed in the entire field, as well as the number four seed in the doubles field.

"I think this speaks to the potential this team has this season," SDSU head coach Peter Mattera said. "This is the premier event on our fall schedule and serves as a great test to see where we are at this point during the fall season for our entire group of nine. Most of the nationally-ranked players in our region are at this event. This is the flagship event of our fall season"

San Diego State's Bunyawi Thamchaiwat opens the event as the overall number two seed in the bracket. Fresh off an appearance at the ITA Women's All-American Championships, the senior has a first round bye and will begin play in the round of 64 Thursday afternoon.

Aztec Tamara Arnold, seeded 17-32 (players seeded nine through 16 and 17 through 32 are not distinguished by seeds but are placed in the bracket alphabetically in those bracketed positions) in the event, will open plat against Magdalena Hedrzak of CSUN in the round of 128 Thursday morning.

Two Aztec players, Alexandria Von Tersch Pohrer and Agustina Rimoldi Godoy, will play seeded-opponents in the opening round. In all, nine Aztec players will compete in the singles draw.

San Diego State is well represented in doubles play, with four teams earning a spot among the 64-team field and the pair of Thamchaiwat and Arnold earning the number four overall seed. The pair will enjoy a first round bye and will begin action in the round of 32 on Friday.

Three other SDSU duos, Regina Pitts and Julia Jordan, Alicia Melosch and Nnena Nadozie and Von Tersch Pohrer and Cécile Morin, will be in action on Thursday.
