Men’s Golf Wraps Up Day One of JTS Cup

ROLAND, Ark. -- The San Diego State men's golf team wrapped up the first day of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup at The Alotian Golf Club with two rounds Monday in Roland, Arkansas.
 
The Aztecs opened with a 17-over-par 305 on the par-72, 7,396-yard course, before shooting a 14-over 302 in the second round when it played at 7,347 yards. SDSU sits in sixth place after two rounds at 31-over 607, 12 shots back of Florida State (+19) for fifth place. No. 14 Notre Dame leads the way at -7 following a 282 and a 287, while No. 39 Arizona (+4), Alabama (+6) and No. 2 Arkansas (+11) are also in the field.
 
Senior Steve Sugimoto (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) leads San Diego State at 6-over 150, which has him tied for 17th out of 36 golfers. Sugimoto started out with a 5-over 77 in the first round, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 558-yard 14th hole and a pair of birdies. He then shot a 1-over 73 on his second 18, recording five birdies, two bogeys and two double bogeys.

Freshman Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS), meanwhile, is tied for 21st at 7-over 151 following rounds of 75 and 76. Lague sank three birdies in the first round, offset by six bogeys. In the second round, Lague notched three birdies against seven bogeys.
 
Freshman Jack Townsend (San Diego/Charter School of San Diego) and senior Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) are each tied for 27th at 10-over 154. Townsend logged rounds of 78 and 76, with the former highlighted by three birdies, but five bogeys and a quadruple bogey on the par-4, 441-yard seventh hole. In his second round, Townsend was unable to record a birdie but had 14 pars and four bogeys.
 
Guezzale matched Townsend at +10 after rounds of 75 and 79. Guezzale had one birdie - par-5, 574-yard eighth - in his first round and two - No. 8 and par-4, 444-yard 12th - in his second round.
 
Joey Moore (Billings, Mont.) also was in the lineup for the Aztecs and is 31st at 14-over 158. Moore opened with a 9-over 81 with a lone birdie on the par-4, 359-yard 13th and followed with a 5-over 77 in the second round with a pair of birdies (par-4, 393-yard third and No. 14).
 
Notre Dame's Taichi Kho leads all competitors at 6-under 138, while teammate Palmer Jackson and Arkansas' Mateo Fernandez De Oliveira are two shots back in a tie for second at 4-under 140.
 
SDSU returns to action on Tuesday morning.
