SAN JOSE, Calif. – Sophomore keeper Cameron Illingworth made six saves, equaling her career-high, and recorded the first shutout of her collegiate career as the San Diego State Aztecs and San Jose State Spartans could not decide a winner in 110 minutes and finished in a 0-0 tie on Sunday afternoon.
Illingworth, who transferred from Kansas State after the 2020 season, made five saves in the two periods of regulation and one in the second overtime, equaling her career-high, which she set at Kansas State in a game against Texas on Oct. 9, 2020.
In two games this season, both double overtime affairs this weekend, the Santa Ana, Calif., native, had 11 saves in 217:20 for a goals against average of 0.41 and of the 30 shots she faced only one got past her.
San Diego State (6-9-1, 4-3-1 Mountain West) produced a season-high 21 shots with nearly half coming off the feet of Denise Castro (six) and Kiera Utush (four). The 21 shots are the most by the Aztecs since a 25-shot barrage in the 2020 season opener against Nevada on March 5, 2021.
The Aztecs had multiple chances to put a goal on the board, with the first coming in the ninth minute. Hope Paredes, taking a corner, played the ball to the back post. It was just out of the reach of Malia Kaleiohi who was alone at the far post and would have just needed one touch to put it in.
Then in the 13th minute, Denise Castro was dragged down in the box which gave the Aztecs a penalty kick. Laura Fuentes took the PK, but her attempt, which had Spartans keeper Autumn Monty beaten, went off the post to keep it 0-0.
Emma Gaines-Ramos, in the 33rd minute, played a beautiful pass to Alexys Ocampo who was making a long run toward the post on the opposite side of the field. Gaines-Ramos placed the ball just in front of Ocampo who one-timed a shot that went just over the crossbar.
After 45 minutes SDSU led 8-to-6 in shots, but San Jose State (7-8-1, 4-3-1 Mountain West) put three shots on goal to the Aztecs one.
Early in the second half, in the 54th minute, Trinity Coker took a shot from inside the box which Monty had to dive to her left to save. Off the ensuing corner, Castro took a shot at the far post, which Monty had to dive to the opposite direction to make another save.
Then in the 82nd minute, Castro had a shot from just outside the 18, which ricocheted off the far post to leave the score still at 0-0.
In the first extra period, San Diego State out shot the Spartans 3-to-1 and put two shots on frame, but were unable to score.
In the second overtime, the Aztecs, who controlled possession for nearly 60 percent of the game, again outshot San Jose State 4-to-1 and put three on goal. The final shot of the contest, a Trinity Coker attempt, was saved by Monty with just four seconds left and the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
In addition to Castro and Utush's combined ten shots, Coker and Laura Fuentes produced three shots each. Ocampo had two shots and Kaleiohi, Jessica Sanders and Sarah Funk took one shot apiece.
Junior striker Rachelle Elve returned to the lineup for the first time since the Aztecs game against Boise State on Oct. 1, a span of four contests.
For the Spartans Evan House and Cynthia Flores attempted a team-high three shots and Monty made eight saves.
THE NOTE
After not playing an overtime game in the first 12 contests of the season, San Diego State has played into extra time in three of the last four matches and are 1-1-1 in those games.
