SAN DIEGO – San Diego State senior Klara Thormalm has been named the Mountain West Conference's Swimmer of the Week for the week ending on Oct. 10. The announcement was made from the conference office in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Tuesday morning.
A native of Vetlanda, Sweden, Thormalm competed in seven races last week, recorded wins in the two individual competitions and had a first, second, third, fourth and fifth place finish in five relay events.
Last Thursday, in helping to secure the program's 29th straight dual meet victory, an 81-65 win at Pepperdine, Thormalm was part of the winning 200 Medley Relay team and earned a second-place finish in the 200 Free Relay.
On Friday and Saturday, the Aztecs were in Fresno, Calif., to compete against California, UCLA, Washington State, Fresno State and San Jose State in the Chick-Fil-A Invitational.
Thormalm, the reigning two-time Mountain West Swimmer of the Year, earned a pair of wins in Fresno. The first came in Friday's 100 Breaststroke and the second in Saturday's 200 Breaststroke. She also swam a 100 Breaststroke time trial and finished in 59.18, which is the second fastest time in program history, trailing only her own 58.68, which she established at the NCAA Championships in March.
In her three relays in Fresno, she picked up a third, fourth and fifth place finish.
She was a member of the third-place 400 Free Relay squad and finished fourth in the 400 Medley Relay and was fifth in the 200 Free Relay. For the two days in Fresno, she was only beaten in relays by swimmers from California and once by swimmers from UCLA, and in both of her individual races, she was the fastest swimmer in the pool.
For her collegiate career, this is the second Swimmer of the Week honor for Thormalm, the first of this season and the first for an Aztecs this year.
