MEDINAH, Ill. – The Aztec women's golf team came in 11th place in the Illini Invitational at Medinah Tuesday afternoon, finishing with a score of 868 (+4).
On Tuesday, SDSU finished up the second round (10 holes), which was suspended due to poor weather Monday, and then played their third round. After shooting a 287 in the first round, the Aztecs shot a 291 and 290 in their last two rounds. The Illini Invitational featured six schools ranked in the top 30 of the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
Sara Kjellker and freshman Anika Sato, who have each been the top Aztec finisher in the team's first two tournaments, tied for 18th place to lead SDSU. They each finished with a two-under-par 214.
Sato's 70 (-2) in her second round was the lowest 18-hole score of her young collegiate career. She then shot a 71 in her final round, finishing with back-to-back birdies. Sato has been under par in four of her last five rounds.
Kjellker shot a 70 in her final round, her second round under par in the tournament. She had a stretch of three birdies in six holes.
Bernice Olivarez Ilas had her second top-30 finish of the fall, tying for 28th after shooting a 216 (even par). She posted rounds of 70, 72 and 74. Her second round featured four birdies, but also two bogeys and a double bogey. In her final round, she had two birdies and four bogeys.
Sammy Lee shot a 10-over-par 226, shooting a 73, 76, and 77 to tie for 71st.
Anna Lina Otten finished 12-over-par with a 228. She shot a 75 in her final round. She was even through four holes, but then was three-over on the remaining 14.
This was the final fall tournament for the Aztecs. Their next competition is their home event, the Lamkin Invitational Feb. 14-15 at the Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
