SEATTLE, Wash. – The No. 13 Aztec men's soccer team (6-1-2, 2-1-0) suffered their first loss of the season, falling to No. 2 Washington (8-0-0, 1-0-0) 1-0 in extra time Thursday evening. The Huskies' Dylan Teves scored in the 94th minute on a cross that got knocked down and was bouncing around a crowded box.
It is the Aztecs' first loss of the season and the first time they've trailed all season. They hadn't given up a goal since September 3.
"A tough result against a phenomenal opponent in Washington," Head coach Ryan Hopkins said after the match. "To play the number two team in the country to basically a stand still on their home field shows the growth of our program and exciting times ahead. In these NCAA tournament-type games, the margins are extremely thin and credit to Washington for executing one more play than us."
SDSU, who entered the night leading the nation in team goals allowed average, gave up just two shots on goal and held the Huskies under two goals for the first time this season.
It was a back-and-forth match that had a postseason feel as each team's defense stood its ground throughout regulation. There were a combined three shots on goal through the first 90 minutes.
SDSU's first great opportunity came midway through the first half when Laukoa Santos sent a ball up the line to Iñigo Villaldea who found Andre Ochoa in the middle of the box. Ochoa took a touch and wound up to strike but the ball was poked away by a Husky defender.
A few minutes later, the lights in Husky Soccer Stadium went out, causing a 20-minute delay while power was restored.
After UW held a 7-3 shot advantage in the first half, SDSU built momentum and outshot the Huskies 5-4 in the second half.
The Aztecs best opportunity came in the 87th minute when Henry Smith-Hastie received a pass from Ochoa and sent a rocket from 20 yards out that ricocheted off the crossbar.
Washington's game-winning goal came following a cross that was headed down and off an Aztec defender right to the feet of Dylan Teves who fired it into the back of the net.
Goalkeeper Jacob Castro (6-1-2), a UW transfer, was spectacular again and allowed just his second goal of the year.
